Some areas receive adequate rainfall throughout the year but even if so, conservation is still needed because these areas one day they may become victims of drought. If you’re looking for ways to conserve water in your garden, consider the following;
Harvest rain water
It is not easy for many people to do this but this method is pretty simple. You just divert water from the drainpipe to large plastic containers. The use of plastic containers isn’t a bad idea because these containers aren’t porous in nature. Water will not evaporate and you can use it in watering plants during drought season.
Water your plants using effective watering techniques
There are several watering techniques that you can apply and they’ll help you conserve water. Some of these techniques are;
Drip irrigation: With this irrigation technique valve pipes drip water where you have instructed them to go. No water goes to waste because the delivery is targeted. When you’re done with your irrigation, you switch off the valves.
Watering cans and horses: They are used to water plants beneath the leaves leaving the surrounding soil dry. Although they are labour intensive, the amount of water that will be used will be little.
Water your plants at the right time
To make the good use of water, it is important to water plants at the right time. It is advisable to water your garden during sunrise or sunset. This is because you’ll not have to worry about evaporation which makes watering less effective. Don’t water your plants when it’s windy because wind can blow sprinklers of the target and also increase evaporation.
Practice Mulching
Mulching is the covering of soil surface using material that will suppress the growth of weed and retain moisture in the soil. Mulching reduces the use of water in your garden by 50%. Besides suppressing the growth of weeds it will also keep pests away.
Ensure there is no pipe, coupling, faucet and all equipments aren’t leaking
Take time and inspect pipe connection and see if there is any leakage. Many people are caught unaware because some of these leakages are not visible. Check your pipe connection frequently to ensure they drip-free.
Use the right amount of water
Watering your plants with a lot of water isn’t doing your plants a favor but instead you’re wasting water. Excess watering will result into excess water bills and even it will flush important nutrients away. It will also give rise to dependant plants which will end up eating the best part of your soil.
Conserving water is not a big task. By following the listed ways, you will end up saving gallons of water each year.
